Dr. Quarles will present a lecture titled A Real Nice Number: Errata in William Albright’s Fantasy Etudes at the 2023 North American Saxophone Alliance Conference hosted by the University of Southern Mississippi. William Albright’s Fantasy Etudes for saxophone quartet has become a cornerstone of the modern saxophone quartet repertoire. However, the published score and parts contain a multitude of discrepancies that need to be reconciled to ensure that future performers of the piece will give performances that are true to the composer’s intent. This document provides a brief biography of William Albright and the history of the commissioning and engraving of the Fantasy Etudes. Drawing on my research of materials contained in the William Albright Papers at the University of Michigan’s Bentley Historical Library, and interviews conducted with founding PRISM Quartet members Matthew Levy and Tim Miller, I propose modifications to the published score and parts in the accompanying Errata List.
